Cipher SoftBUFR library

Cipher SoftBUFR is a universal encoding/decoding library of C++ classes for the table-driven binary code BUFR. In this context, universal means that it is not restricted to particular types of BUFR message. Cipher SoftBUFR is one of the members of the Cipher series, although it may be acquired independently.

  • More on general features of the Cipher series.
  • Contact us if you are interested in acquiring Cipher SoftBUFR or just want to find more.

Platforms - Cipher SoftBUFR runs on Linux and several other Unix environments and also on Microsoft Windows.

Language. As the native language of the library is C++, the full functionality is available to programs written in C/C++.

Current SoftBUFR version - The current version is 5.3.1, released in Aug 2011.

BUFR editions - For encoding, SoftBUFR supports BUFR editions 3 and 4, and it can decode messages conforming to editions 1 or 2 as well.

Demo - BUFRtool, also member of the Cipher series, is a free demo program based on SoftBUFR. It can give you a flavour of how SoftBUFR works, or it might even be the solution you are looking for!

The SoftBUFR package includes:

  • Tutorial with practical examples.
  • Documentation in HTML format.
  • WMO BUFR tables, versions 7 to 16. As version 7 of WMO BUFR tables is backwards compatible, it can be used to decode messages encoded with older versions of WMO standard tables.
  • One year of free maintenance and support.

Custom software and consultancy. We can provide custom software and consultancy in the area of environmental data processing, and in particular in the area of meteorological codes.

SoftBUFR - software and hardware requirements

  • Recent C++ compiler, for instance Microsoft Visual C++ or GNU g++.
  • Operating system needs to be some flavour of Unix or Linux or Microsoft Windows.
  • Hard disk space for installation 15 MB.
  • Memory requirements As Cipher products do not require a fast CPU or a lot of memory, the requirements on memory and CPU are those of your C++ compiler.
